CHARSHEE'S CHALLENGE
by George Edward Tait

Feisty and fearless female - formidable to a fault
Friends felt the fury of her force -
Enemies expired.
Her ancestry articulated in the antechamber of always
Bilateral blues of landlords and landlessness
A freedom fighter on the frontline of forever.
How do we honor her?
Her wisdom weighing in
On the scorching scales of scholarship and skepticism,
This master teacher of master teachers
Who transmitted testing
Through the technology of truth and tough love,
Who gave grades to the glorified
& guidance to the grassroots,
Who warred against weaklings and wimps,
Who watched warriors wilt,
Who watched women weep.
How do we honor her? Huh?
Do we take the days & divide them into duty?
Do we take the minutes & multiply them into militancy?
Do we break something? Do we build something?
Do we become something?

Do we count the blessings of her existence?
Do we shed the blood of her enemies?
Do we liberate the land of her lateral lineage?
Do we affirm the acceptance of her Afrikan ancestry?
Are these trick questions? How do we honor her?
How do the pallbearers pay homage?

Charshee - Call her name!
Let the call crescendo into the cosmos.
Now summon her spirit in silence; invoke her image.
Charshee - Call her name, again!
Let the call crescendo into the consciousness.
Conjure up the calendar of commitment.
Speak to the sky;
Sing to the sun.
It's Charshee's Day!
